Having a child with the autism spectrum? That surely is a big challenge as a parent. No doubt there are some cheerful moments for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is no denying the mind-grinding challenges parents face, and the toll that has to be paid. In a world yet to have more compassion, parents worry themselves sick as they have to knock doors for understanding and consideration. And to add more to the bill, they might have to sacrifice a job or a luring career, might go into debt to secure necessary treatment fees, and suffer rage at the perception of injustice they feel! Grieve … oh yes they do, a lot! When a child is diagnosed with ASD, sadness, anxiety and fear ensue as likely AND natural reactions. Parents rush to the internet and spend sleepless nights struggling to learn everything they can about autism as quickly as they can, sometimes even forced to take rash major decisions or actions based on far-from perfect knowledge or accurate non-biased information from various education and autism rehabilitation establishments. Everyone may feel down sometimes, but parents of children with ASD may feel down much more often than most and deep too! Nevertheless and as the wise man once said; there is always a beam of light somewhere ahead, there are plentiful ways through which parents can help their children with ASD overcome their challenges, and accordingly, theirs as well. One golden rule stands though, when parents are looking after their child with ASD, taking care of themselves is not considered as selfishness or a luxury— actually it is an obligation. The ability to be emotionally strong and with a clear, non-clouded mind will – beyond any doubt – allow you to support your child and choose the best options for a better life for him/her.
